Extraordinary Popular Delusions and The Madness of Crowds
Martino Fine Books, 2009

This book describes how humans time and again get captivated by weird ideas and pursue them into utter absurdity. It is about groupthink, bubbles, scares, and just collective madness, and it is as well written as it is thought provoking. Even though it was first published in 1864, so almost 150 years ago, nothing seems to have changed since. I think every person on Earth should read it. It is at least considered mandatory reading in the better part of the financial community.
Booker, Christopher & Richard North
Scared to Death: From BSE to Global Warming- Why Scares Are Costing Us the Earth.
Oxford University Press, 2007.

A very detailed and extremely well researched and written book about the main scares since 1980, with a slightly UK-centric perspective. One author has been science writer for the Sunday telegraph for several decades, where he covered all the scares in the book, and the other research director in the European parliament. They know what they are talking about and the analysis is sharp and to the point.
Herman, Arthur
The Idea of Decline in Western History
Princeton University Press, 2000.

A thorough treatise on the history of declinism. Not an easy read, but comprehensive and thoughtful.
Goldacre, Ben
Bad science
Princeton University Press, 2000.

I great and funny book about pseudo science, of which there is a lot. Mainly focused on healing/nutrition nonsense and the way the press deals with it.
